AI, geopolitics and the new constraint model!

AI, geopolitics and the new constraint model

Sourceability’s SVP digital transformation, Rob Picken, explained: “We will see continued shifts toward an AI-centric, capacity-constrained model through 2026 and into 2027. High-performance components will continue to take priority amid ongoing supplier restructuring, with AI taking precedence. We are seeing sustained investment in AI infrastructure, despite concerns about the AI bubble. Suppliers warn that memory may remain constrained until 2030.

“AI isn’t the only disruption causing supply chain constraints, either. Geopolitical tensions stemming from tariffs and the Nexperia division have caused long-lasting challenges. Now, the US-Israel and Iran conflict has placed additional strain on an already overtaxed supply chain. Raw materials and logistics costs have also fluctuated over the last year, with end users absorbing the price.

“Teams that adopt proactive sourcing strategies, including diversified sourcing and stronger supplier partnerships, can gain a competitive advantage in this environment. Ultimately, purchasing teams must evolve from reactive buyers into strategic supply chain managers. Success will come from balancing cost, risk and production continuity in an increasingly complex environment.”

While AI is often positioned as the defining force shaping the next phase of the supply chain, it is only one part of a much broader and more complex picture. Geopolitical tensions, trade policies and regional conflicts continue to exert significant influence over supply routes, costs and availability. At the same time, fluctuations in raw materials and logistics add further instability. For procurement teams, these overlapping pressures create a landscape where multiple variables must be managed simultaneously. Success depends on technology adoption and the ability to coordinate across an increasingly interconnected and unpredictable system.
